You should see A Hidden Life if you have the chance. I did. I liked it very much.
I like the part at the beginning when the historic footage ends and you see the opening shots and are reminded that you’re watching a Terrence Malick movie.
I like the part when Franz and Fani embrace when he gets home after being away for a while.
I like the part when the old man, the one who is losing his faith, asks, “Don’t they recognize evil when they see it?”
I like the whole scene with the painter when he confesses that he’s not been painting the true Christ but a comfortable facsimile.
I like anytime there’s a shot of the mountains. It makes me want to be a farmer who lives at the base of an Austrian mountain which is foolish because I am in no wise built for that kind of life and would be overwhelmed and/or dead within a month.
I like the Jaggerstatter family donkey. I smile whenever it shows up on screen. Seems like a great pet.
I like when Franz is talking to the Pontius Pilate character in the middle of his trial and says exactly the right thing in the right way.
I like when Franz’s friend from earlier, the one with the cleft lip, shows up in jail with Franz and reminds Franz of joy and beauty. When he talks to Franz he presses his face up against a glass window pane the way a child would.
I like when Fani looks into Franz’s eyes and tells him, “Whatever you do, I am with you. Always.” and she can say it because she knows he’s a good man and can trust that he will make the right decision and his resolve is strengthened because of her faith in his faith and they’re both strengthened in each other. The Franz and Fani marriage is my favorite movie marriage. It is beautiful and A Hidden Life is beautiful and if you have a chance to see it, you should.
