My wife and me, we like books. I’ve drawn in most of the ones we own, quick little sketches that I put in a corner of one of the first few pages. Behold, a few of them.
I’ve never read anything by the Bronte sisters, but this is how I imagine them:
The one I did for The Autobiography of Malcolm X (as told to Alex Haley) is Malcolm from his zoot suit days accompanied by his Sophia.
Ever read The Good Lord Bird, James McBride’s retelling of the John Brown story? You should. It’s good.
The Roundhouse is good, too. Louise Erdrich wrote it. There’s a scene in it where three boys are swimming and another boy unwisely chooses to confront them.
Here’s my take on Tigger:
Have you ever read The Armies of the Night? No? Me either. But we own it, so I drew Norman Mailer in it. I’m not crazy about Mailer. The Naked and the Dead was good.
There’s this artist named Man Arenas. He’s a favorite of mine and he does these poetic-looking, delicately water-colored comics that I can’t read because I’m monolingual and they’re not in English. This one is called Yaxin Il Fauno Gabriel.
I like Skottie Young, too. His Wonderful Wizard of Oz comics are exceptional.
Turns out that I own a lot of art books and comics. This one is by a cartoonist named Arthur De Pins, The March of the Crabs: The Empire of the Crabs.
Lady Audley’s Secret is another book we own that I haven’t read. But that didn’t stop me from drawing a coy Victorian woman.
